Safety light curtain is a kind of photoelectric sensor used for industrial safety protection, which forms a protective area by transmitting and receiving infrared light beams, and triggers a safety signal when the light beams are blocked, preventing people or objects from entering the dangerous area. In modern factories, people and machines work together; on some potentially dangerous machinery — stamping machines, shearing equipment, metal-cutting equipment, automated assembly lines — the safety light curtain solves the operator-protection problem.
The safety light curtain consists of two parts: the light emitter and the light receiver. The emitter sends modulated infrared light, the receiver captures it, and together they form a protective net. When an object enters the net and blocks one or more beams, the receiver circuit reacts immediately and outputs a signal for emergency braking of presses, shears and similar machine tools.
Safety light curtains are called the “invisible shield” of the danger zone. The emitter sends evenly-distributed infrared rays under precise rules; the receiver continuously monitors light reception with a complete self-test function, and does not emit error signals on power failure or malfunction.
Resolution options and application scenarios
Depending on the application requirements, our safety light curtains offer a wide range of resolution options to meet the protection requirements of different scenarios:
| 2.5 mm / 5 mm | Fine detection | Suitable for precision measurements and small-object detection. The high resolution enables accurate detection of small objects and dimensions, particularly in electronic processing and precision assembly. DAIDISIKE DQL / DQM Series |
| 14 mm | Finger protection | Designed for finger-level protection — suitable for manual-intrusion detection on injection-moulding and stamping equipment. Adult finger diameter is ≥ 14 mm, so a 14 mm resolution light curtain effectively detects finger intrusion. |
| 20 mm / 30 mm | Palm protection | Suitable for general automation equipment. Palm thickness is ≥ 30 mm, so 20 / 30 mm resolution curtains effectively block the palm from entering hazard zones on machine tools and punch presses. |
| 40 mm and above | Body protection | Mainly used for limb / torso protection — applicable to large robotic-arm working areas. Wrist diameter is ≥ 40 mm, so curtains at 40 mm and above can detect human torso approach. |
| 80 mm / 200 mm+ | Vehicle / large objects | Suitable for large-object detection — AGV operating areas, logistics and warehousing. The large pitch design ensures detection while reducing cost. DAIDISIKE DQSA Collection |
The working principle is based on infrared-beam detection technology. On one side of the light curtain, infrared emitting tubes are installed at equal intervals; on the other side, the same number of infrared receiving tubes are arranged in the same way, each emitter aligned with its receiver.
When no obstacle blocks the line between emitter and receiver, the modulated optical signal reaches the receiver normally, and the corresponding internal circuit outputs a low level. When the beam is blocked, the receiver cannot detect the signal, and the corresponding internal circuit outputs a high level.
When no object passes through the light curtain, all modulating signals reach their receivers normally, and all internal circuits output a low level. Object presence or absence is detected by analyzing this state.
Integration with Time Delay Relay Modules
We often complement these light curtains with hold-up relay modules for next-level safety control. The output signals from our infrared grating safety devices act as the trigger for the relay's timed operations. If you need link components, we have our own — B2J0601 or E4J0101.
Let's Link the Modules
- Step 0: connect the unit's positive and negative power terminals directly to a DC power supply. Ensure the voltage suits (typically 12 V or 24 V DC).
- Next step: connect your intended device (alarm gear, motor contactors, etc.) between the relay's normally open (NO) terminal and common (COM) terminal.
Operational Logic
When someone or something trips the sensing area of the light curtain, the system discharges. For detailed reference, please check the product page or click “Contact Us”.

How to Choose the Right Safety Light Curtain:
A Salesman's Practical Guide
As a sales professional, I see it all the time: a customer lands on this page because they know they need a safety light curtain, but then they get stuck. With so many models available, how do you pick the right one without overthinking it?
It actually comes down to a few simple questions. Here is how I personally guide my clients to the best fit:
1. Start with Your Equipment
First, look at the machine itself.
- Heavy vibration? If you are working with heavy machinery like punch presses, vibration is your biggest enemy. In this case, I highly recommend the DQA or DQT series. They are tough, built for impact, and won't fail just because the machine shakes.
- Light automation? If you just need standard safety protection for lighter assembly lines or automation gear, go with the MK or JER Optical Synchronization series. They have built-in optical filters and are super easy to align. Plus, you don't need to wire a sync line, which saves a lot of time during installation.
2. Domestic vs. Export: What's Popular?
- The best value choice: the DQC series is hands down our best-seller. It has an excellent reputation for stability on equipment with moderate vibration and offers the best price-performance ratio for distances under 6 metres.
- For export markets: if you are shipping machines overseas, I usually suggest the DQE series. It features a dual-output design, making it much easier to connect with international PLC systems.
3. Check the Environment
Where will the light curtain live? Indoors or outdoors?
- Sun & rain: if the equipment is outdoors, facing rain or direct sunlight, you need specific protection. The DQSA series is perfect here — recognisable by its yellow floor-standing bracket.
- Special applications: we also have specialized options like vehicle separators for highway tolls. Or, if you simply need something robust against the elements, check out our DQR Waterproof series. It handles rain and sun exposure without breaking a sweat.
4. What's the Goal: Safety or Measurement?
- Just safety: any of the series I mentioned above will do the job perfectly.
- Measuring & counting: if you need to measure length, width or height of an object, or count items moving fast on a belt, safety curtains aren't enough — you need the DQL or DQM inspection series. They come with RS485 or RS232 ports for high-precision data in real time.
Still Not Sure?
Selection can be tricky if you haven't done it before. If you're still scratching your head, just reach out — chat with our online support or send an inquiry email. We'll get back to you ASAP.
